Semuliki National Park – The True Birder’s Paradise
Semuliki National Park is a unique and lesser-known gem in western Uganda, nestled within the Albertine Rift Valley near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Covering 220 square kilometers, the park protects one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse lowland rainforests, an extension of the vast Ituri Forest of the Congo Basin. Semuliki offers a rare Central African jungle experience in East Africa and is famous for its pristine rainforest, hot springs, and rich birdlife.
Highlights of Semuliki National Park
Sempaya Hot Springs: A major highlight of the park, these geothermal springs include the “male” and “female” springs, where hot water bubbles from the earth at near-boiling temperatures—locals even cook eggs in them!
Birdwatching Paradise: With over 440 bird species, including many Congo Basin endemics, Semuliki is a dream for avid birders. Look for species like the white-crested hornbill, red-billed dwarf hornbill, and Nkulengu rail.
Forest Walks: Guided hikes through the dense jungle reveal primates such as black-and-white colobus, De Brazza’s monkeys, and forest elephants.
Cultural Encounters: Visit the Baamba and Batwa communities for insights into traditional forest lifestyles and cultural practices.
