Stretching across 160 km² in Rwanda’s northwest, Volcanoes National Park forms part of the greater Virunga Conservation Area, shared with Uganda and the DRC. It is dominated by five of the eight Virunga volcanoes—Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo—creating a skyline as dramatic as the stories held within it.
The ecosystem here is diverse and layered: bamboo forests, hagenia woodlands, alpine moors, and montane rainforests provide a cool, lush sanctuary for species adapted to high-altitude life. With annual rainfall over 2,000 mm, the park is perpetually green and vibrant, cloaked often in mystical cloud cover that adds to its cinematic beauty.

Gorillas, Golden Monkeys & More
Volcanoes National Park is one of only two places in the world where mountain gorillas can be visited safely and ethically in the wild. With around 10 habituated gorilla families, each trek offers an intimate and humbling moment with one of the planet’s most endangered species—often called the ultimate wildlife experience.
Beyond gorillas, the park is also home to the rare and playful golden monkeys, as well as forest elephants, bushbucks, buffaloes, and over 200 species of birds. The dense forest and volcanic terrain may make sightings challenging, but each encounter here feels earned—and deeply rewarding.
Volcanoes National Park is steeped in the legacy of Dian Fossey, the renowned primatologist who studied and protected the mountain gorillas for nearly two decades. Her work laid the foundation for modern gorilla conservation, and her grave lies near her former Karisoke Research Center, accessible via a scenic memorial hike.
Today, the park represents one of Africa’s greatest conservation success stories. Through tightly regulated tourism and strong community partnerships, gorilla numbers have slowly increased—offering hope to one of the world’s most at-risk species.
Best time to visit
Dry seasons (June–September, December–February): The best conditions for trekking, with clear views and firmer trails.
Wet seasons (March–May, October–November): Lush landscapes and fewer crowds, though trails may be slippery.
